Pismo File Mount Licensing

The PFM Developer Kit has an unrestrictive open license. It can be used free of charge to build commercial and non-commercial software that uses PFM technology.

Commercial and non-commercial software developers can choose to require their users to install the Pismo File Mount Audit Package (PFMAP). In this case no special licensing arrangement and associated fees are required. The PFMAP installer can not be automated as the user must see and agree to the PFMAP license.

Software developers can make special licensing arrangements to allow PFM to be directly integrated with their software. This eliminates the need for the user to separately install PFMAP, as well as provides for contracted developer and user support.

The cost for special licensing is negotiated on a per case basis, based on expected support overhead and volume. For a low volume commercial application, fees will be in the ballpark of a few thousand US dollars per year. For very low volume applications lower pricing can be negotiated. For high volume commercial software, or if exclusivity is required, fees will be higher.

Special PFM licensing is not available with non-recurring fees. For comparison, any Windows file system technology license that has time or version limited updates and support will require periodic re-licensing, and so in effect has recurring fees. Non-recurring fee licenses do not fit the required support model. File system related products on the Windows platform will require occasional updates, at least to support new releases of Windows and to address compatibility issues with 3rd party software.

Priority Support is available for commercial in-house projects that utilize PFM or other Pismo Technic Inc. technologies. This provides for priority developer and user support in cases where special licensing for PFM is not otherwise necessary.

Customization of PFM and other Pismo Technic Inc. technologies is available in exchange for non-recurring engineering fees.
